Waterproofing for Agricultural Water Storage

Agricultural water infrastructure - open reservoirs, lined irrigation channels, concrete storage tanks, and cisterns - requires waterproofing systems that resist permanent water immersion, resist biofouling, and in many cases comply with potable water contact requirements for drinking water stored for livestock. Concrete surfaces without protective lining lose 15-30% of stored water annually through seepage and absorb contaminants from stored fertilisers and pesticides that compromise water quality.

Application Overview

Types of Agricultural Water Storage

Agricultural water storage structures vary widely in form and function - from large open earth reservoirs to small concrete cisterns. Each presents specific waterproofing requirements that must be matched to the correct lining system.

Open Reservoirs & Lined Channels

Earth reservoirs lined with concrete require protective coatings to prevent seepage losses and structural erosion. Gemite's cementitious linings provide a hard, impermeable surface that resists the hydraulic shear of flowing water in irrigation channels and the hydrostatic pressure of full reservoirs.

Concrete Storage Tanks & Cisterns

Above-grade and buried concrete tanks for rainwater harvesting, irrigation supply, and livestock drinking water require internal linings that are non-toxic, durable under permanent immersion, and resistant to the freeze-thaw cycles experienced during empty winter periods.

Technical Highlights

Key Performance Characteristics

Gemite's agricultural water lining systems are engineered for the specific demands of water storage and irrigation infrastructure.

Potable Water Safe Formulations

Where water stored will be consumed by livestock, Gemite's certified potable water contact linings ensure zero leaching of harmful substances - confirmed by independent third-party testing.

Freeze-Thaw Durability

Agricultural water structures that are emptied seasonally experience repeated freeze-thaw cycling on exposed concrete surfaces. Gemite's linings maintain integrity through 50+ freeze-thaw cycles without delamination.

Sulphate & Fertiliser Resistance

Water containing dissolved fertilisers, pesticides, or naturally occurring sulphates from agricultural soils can degrade unprotected concrete. Gemite's sulphate-resistant coatings protect the concrete structure from chemical attack.

Application on New & Existing Concrete

Systems are specified for both new construction - applied before first fill - and rehabilitation of deteriorating existing structures, including those with active seepage at construction joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Agricultural Water Storage - Technical Questions

What is the curing period before filling a lined reservoir?

The minimum curing period before water contact depends on the product system, ambient temperature, and lining thickness. For Gemite's agricultural lining systems, the typical minimum curing period is 7-14 days at +15°C or above before permanent water immersion. During this period, the lining must be protected from direct sunlight (which causes premature drying and surface cracking) and rain (which can wash out uncured material). Our technical data sheets specify exact curing times and environmental requirements for each product.

Can the lining be applied to a reservoir with active water seepage?

Active seepage through construction joints or cracks must be stopped before the main lining system is applied. Gemite supplies rapid-set plugging mortars for sealing active leaks - these are applied first to stop water flow, then the surface is prepared and the main lining system is applied. The technical team will inspect the structure and specify the correct plug and liner sequence for your situation.

How do I estimate how much lining material is needed for my reservoir?

Lining quantity is calculated from the total internal surface area (floor area + wall area) multiplied by the coverage rate of the product at the specified thickness. The coverage rate is given in m²/kg or m²/25 kg bag at the specified DFT. Contact our technical team with the internal dimensions of your reservoir - we will calculate the product quantities and prepare a specification with application instructions.
