Water Infrastructure

Certified Linings for Water & Wastewater Infrastructure

Water infrastructure presents a unique combination of demands: potable water contact compliance, long service life in buried or submerged conditions, resistance to biogenic sulphuric acid corrosion in sewers, and the requirement to rehabilitate existing assets without excavation. Gemite's water infrastructure portfolio covers the full spectrum - from NSF 61 certified coatings for drinking water reservoirs to Spin-Cast pipe lining for network rehabilitation, with proven systems for methane digesters, wastewater treatment plants, and sewer networks.

Six Product Categories for Water Infrastructure

Each category addresses a specific water or wastewater application - from potable water storage to aggressive sewer environments where biogenic acid corrosion destroys unreinforced concrete within years.

Drinking Water Basins

NSF/ANSI 61 certified cementitious linings for potable water reservoirs, cisterns, and water towers - approved for direct contact with drinking water, zero leaching, and long-term chemical stability.

Why Gemite for Water Infrastructure

Four Technical Advantages for Water Asset Owners

Water infrastructure assets are designed for 50-100 year service lives. Protective lining failures require costly dewatering, excavation, and remediation - making correct material selection at the outset critical.

NSF 61 Certified for Potable Water

Gemite's drinking water linings hold NSF/ANSI 61 certification - the international benchmark for materials in contact with potable water. No leaching of harmful substances into the water supply, confirmed by independent third-party testing.

Spin-Cast Trenchless Technology

Gemite supplies specialist cementitious mortars formulated for Spin-Cast application - the trenchless relining method that centrifugally applies mortar inside existing pipes, restoring structural integrity and watertightness without excavation.

Biogenic Acid Resistance

Sewers and wastewater structures are destroyed by biogenic sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄ produced by Thiobacillus bacteria from H₂S). Gemite's sewer lining systems are specifically formulated to resist BSC attack, providing decades of service where ordinary Portland cement fails within years.

Full Asset Life Cycle Coverage

From new construction protection to rehabilitation of assets approaching end of life - Gemite provides solutions for every stage of water infrastructure asset management, backed by a technical team with project experience across Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water Infrastructure - Technical Questions

What does NSF/ANSI 61 certification mean for potable water linings?

NSF/ANSI 61 (Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects) is the North American standard for materials in contact with potable water. It specifies limits on the leaching of contaminants into drinking water and is widely accepted internationally as the benchmark for potable water contact materials. For reservoir linings, NSF 61 certification means the product has been independently tested to confirm it does not leach heavy metals, organic compounds, or other substances above safe thresholds at the concentrations used. In the EU, the equivalent framework is the European Drinking Water Directive (DWD) and related national approvals. Gemite's potable water lining systems hold relevant certifications and our technical team confirms compliance requirements for each country on request.

How does Spin-Cast pipe rehabilitation work and what pipe diameters are suitable?

Spin-Cast (also known as centrifugal casting or spinning) is a trenchless pipeline rehabilitation method. A rotating head is pulled through the pipe while simultaneously applying cementitious mortar or polymer coating, which is centrifugally distributed and compacted against the pipe wall. The result is a uniform lining of 5-20 mm thickness depending on the requirement. The method is suitable for circular pipes from approximately DN 200 to DN 3000 and can accommodate bends and fittings with appropriate equipment. Gemite supplies purpose-formulated mortars for Spin-Cast application - with controlled rheology, high bond strength, and sulphate resistance or NSF 61 approval depending on the application.

What causes biogenic sulphuric acid corrosion in sewers and how is it prevented?

Biogenic sulphuric acid corrosion (BSC) occurs in the crown and upper walls of sewers where there is an air space above the wastewater. Dissolved sulphates in wastewater are reduced to hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) by anaerobic bacteria in the biofilm on submerged pipe walls. H₂S gas then oxidises in the moist air space above the waterline to form sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄), which attacks the concrete surface - dissolving the calcium silicate hydrate binder and leading to structural weakening at rates of 1-10 mm per year in severe conditions. Prevention and rehabilitation require linings with extremely low pH stability - either sulphate-resistant cementitious products or impermeable polymer linings that exclude all moisture and oxygen from reaching the concrete substrate. Gemite's sewer lining systems are formulated and tested for BSC resistance.
