Waterproofing Systems for Rooftops

Flat and low-slope rooftops represent the building element most exposed to weathering - UV radiation, thermal cycling from -30°C to +80°C surface temperature, ponding water, root penetration in green roof applications, and mechanical damage from maintenance access. Gemite's rooftop waterproofing systems are flexible polymer-modified membranes tested to EN 13956, with service lives exceeding 10 years on exposed applications. Systems are available for both new construction and refurbishment over existing substrates.

What Rooftop Waterproofing Must Resist

Unlike basement waterproofing - which is protected from UV and temperature extremes - rooftop membranes face the most demanding combination of environmental stresses on the building envelope.

Thermal Cycling & UV Resistance

Rooftop surfaces reach +80°C in summer and -30°C in winter. The membrane must maintain elasticity across this full temperature range without cracking, delaminating, or losing adhesion to the substrate. UV stabilisers in Gemite's polymer-modified formulations prevent degradation of the binder under prolonged solar exposure.

Green Roof & Root Resistance

Planted (green) roof assemblies require root-resistant membranes certified to FLL guidelines. Gemite supplies systems suitable for extensive green roofs (sedum/grass) and intensive planted terraces, combining waterproofing with root-barrier functionality in a single applied membrane.

Technical Highlights

Key Technical Advantages for Rooftop Applications

Crack-Bridging up to 1.6 mm

Dynamic cracks caused by thermal movement and substrate settlement do not compromise the membrane - flexibility is maintained down to -5°C.

Application on Damp Concrete

Gemite rooftop membranes can be applied on damp (SSD) concrete substrates - no extended drying period required before application.

Compatible with Insulation Systems

Systems are tested and specified for inverted (warm) and cold roof assemblies, including compatibility with EPS, XPS, and mineral wool insulation layers.

Green Roof Ready

Root-resistant system variants are available for planted rooftop applications - certified per FLL guidelines for extensive and intensive green roofs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rooftop Waterproofing - Technical Questions

What is the difference between exposed and buried rooftop membranes?

An exposed membrane is left directly exposed to UV, rain, and temperature - it must be UV-stable and self-protecting. A buried (inverted or concealed) membrane is protected by insulation, paving, or growing medium above it. Exposed membranes require polymer-modified systems with UV stabilisers; buried membranes may use a wider range of cementitious products. The application determines the product selection - our technical team confirms the correct system for your rooftop assembly during specification.

Can Gemite products be applied over existing waterproofing membranes?

Refurbishment applications over existing membranes require careful assessment: adhesion of the existing system, presence of water trapped beneath it, structural capacity for the additional layer weight, and compatibility between the existing and new membrane chemistries. In some cases, the existing membrane must be removed; in others, overcoating is possible with appropriate primers. Gemite's technical team provides on-site assessment and refurbishment recommendations - contact us with details of your existing system.

What minimum slope is required for flat rooftop waterproofing?

Building regulations and roofing standards typically require a minimum fall of 1:80 (approximately 1.25%) on flat roofs to ensure drainage and prevent prolonged ponding water. However, Gemite's waterproofing systems are designed to remain watertight even under standing water conditions - the minimum slope requirement exists to protect the roofing assembly as a whole (thermal performance, load distribution) rather than because the membrane itself fails under ponding. For rooftops with inadequate drainage falls, our technical team recommends additional drainage layer solutions in combination with the waterproofing system.
